Guide for US plumbing shops
After-hours answering service for plumbers: cost
Night and weekend calls are where emergency plumbing work comes from, and where small shops are least likely to pick up. Here's how answering options are priced and how to decide what's worth paying.
The common pricing models
- Per minute (live agents). You buy a bucket of minutes and pay overage beyond it. Ask how they count minutes: hold time, call wrap-up, and rounding up to 30 or 60 seconds all add up.
- Per call. Predictable per call, but spam and wrong numbers can count.
- Flat monthly (AI or software). A fixed fee with an included number of AI minutes or calls. Usually cheaper per call, but check how it handles true emergencies and when it hands off to you.
- Do it yourself. Forward to the owner’s cell. Costs nothing upfront, but you pay in sleep and in calls you miss anyway.
Prices change often and vary by provider, so get current quotes from each provider’s own pricing page rather than trusting a roundup article.
Questions to ask any provider
- Is there a setup fee, a contract term, or a cancellation fee?
- How are minutes or calls counted, and what’s the overage rate?
- Can it tell an emergency (active leak, sewer backup, no water) from a quote request, and how does it reach you for emergencies?
- Does it collect name, address, problem, and callback number every time?
- Can it text the caller and send you a summary by text?
- Are there holiday or weekend surcharges?
A simple break-even check
Monthly cost ÷ (average job value × close rate) = new jobs per month you need to recover to break even. Example with made-up inputs: $149 ÷ ($450 × 40%) ≈ 0.8 jobs. Use your own numbers in the plumber missed-call calculator.
For context on why missed calls matter: in a CallRail (2025) survey of 1,000 US consumers, 21% said they immediately call another business when one doesn’t answer.
What PlumbPing will cost
PlumbPing is in pre-sale and not live yet. Planned pricing: $199 one-time setup, then $79/mo with 100 AI minutes or $149/mo with 400 AI minutes. Month-to-month, no annual contract. Target launch: June 30, 2027.
